Listen to Sanne 🌟 Kalkman from CodeSandbox this week during DEVWorld Conference online to her talk on #Elixir. 👉 Sign up to replay via https://lnkd.in/eZUKXrGd According to the 2023 Stack Overflow Developer Survey, Elixir is the second most loved programming language, and its web framework Phoenix takes the number one spot in most loved frameworks. Not only is Elixir a joy to work with, it is also an excellent choice for highly scaleable and fault-tolerant backend systems and is an important part of successful tech companies such as Discord and Podium This talk will highlight the main ways in which Elixir differs from other commonly used backend languages like #JavaScript or #Ruby. Then, it will give developers from other languages an introduction into OTP, the underlying framework that makes it almost trivial to build concurrent and highly fault-tolerant systems in Elixir (and Erlang). Lastly, Sanne will highlight some of the specific ways in which Elixir and #Phoenix have allowed CodeSandbox to grow and move quickly with a very small team of #backend developers. 🎉 Internship Highlight: Boosting Tech and Professional Skills 🎉 Recently, Daan Peranović, our latest intern, successfully presented his internship project! We are very happy about his work and proud of his professional growth over the past 5 months. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗗𝗮𝗮𝗻'𝘀 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲? A bit of background - Daan is studying Technical Physics and he's interested in commercial spaceflight. Because of that, he wanted to do an internship in a startup involved in the aerospace industry. An internship with us was a great match. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗗𝗮𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘂𝘀? "I really liked that because Eddytec is an early-stage startup, what I did on a day-to-day basis really mattered. I had ample room to decide how I wanted to approach the problems and to take ownership of the project. Another aspect I enjoyed was that the work was hands-on, and I was able to learn iterative design and engineering. But the highlight of the internship was the mentorship I got from Josefine Quack. Big shoutout to her for that!" 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀? Daan's research findings make an important contribution to defining the next steps in our R&D and advancing our sensor developments. And Daan sees clear benefits for his career as well, thanks to the internship going beyond solely technical training : "While working closely with Josefine, I learned how to be a better professional, for example how to build a network. She also made me realise what career opportunities I can pursue with my background. I found it extremely valuable and it gave me a lot of confidence in how I should approach the next steps in my career. The internship also gave me a great perspective on how the startup world works, and how I can fit in it in the future.
